In his youth he participated in several Karate events including the European championships in Paris in 1984. Later he also got interested in traditional Japanese martial arts, becoming a member of a traditional jujutsu school (Hontai Yoshin Ryu).

Guy first met Inoue Soke in Italy, in 1983, during a demonstration tour of martial arts (including Sumo, naginata, karate, iai and jujutsu) in Italy. At that time, he was participating in the demonstration of Shito Ryu Karate with Ogasahara and Nakahashi sensei. Together, as part of a larger company, he travelled from Milan to Sicily where he staid several days in the same hotel. He was very impressed by the way members of Hontai Yoshin Ryu approached Budo.

After finishing his medical education, Guy started to become more and more interested in the traditional aspects of the art and in 1989 (he was at that time working for the University of Brussels), he took a 1-year sabbatical to study Shito-Ryu karate with Mabuni-sensei (son of the founder) in Osaka, Japan.
Since Nishinomiya is very near to Osaka, Guy decided to also study bojutsu and iaido with members of the Imazu dojo. The introduction was easy since he could refer to his time in Italy and he was lucky to get additional classes from Inoue Kyoichi, the son of soke, later to become the next soke.

Guy received most of his early iaido training, from the late Kurishima Sensei (at that time one of the most senior Hontai Yoshin Ryu teachers and an expert in Toyama Ryu Iaido). It didn t take long however before Guy was completely absorbed by the martial wealth the school could offer and he started practicing all aspects of the school. Since he staid in Japan with a cultural visa to study martial arts, Guy could train a lot during the day as well as during regular evening classes. This is how he ended up accompanying Soke when he was teaching Hontai Yoshin Ryu to junior high school kids in Imazu. In return, Guy received private training from Soke and also spent a lot of time at his house between different classes.

During his stay in Japan, his friend Alain Berckmans, came over to train with Mabuni sensei for 1 month. Guy took the opportunity to introduce him to Kyoichi sensei and as expected Alain also got passionate about traditional Bujutsu. Upon his return in Belgium, Alain and Guy have been studying Hontai Yoshin Ryu very intensively and went back to Japan, nearly on an annual basis. Some other senior members of the Karate school (Frederic Roncioni, Roger Bissot and Alain Missorten) immediately got interested, and from that time on they have been forming a small but devoted group following Guy s path.

Today, Guy is still a member of the Imazu dojo but he is also responsible for the Belgian Branch of Hontai Yoshin Ryu.

Guy has been mentioned in several articles of Budo , the official magazine of the Nihon Budokan (in Japanese). Guy also wrote articles on Hontai Yoshin Ryu for koryu.com. In an embu, organized for Mabuni s 90th aniversary (2008, Corsica, France), Guy performed Hontai Yoshin Ryu s Nage no kata together with his student Sami Mech Mech.
